Biofeedback Questions & Answers

How does it work?
According to the proven principles of Quantum Physics, 'mind' and 'matter' cannot be separated. There is an energetic continuum that connects all manifestation on a deep, subatomic level. Thus, thoughts, which can be electromagnetically measured, effect our bodies and world.
A computer is simply an extension of human potential, and also produces a 'programmed' electromagnetic field that affects all matter on a subtle energetic level.
The 'two way' interface between computer and client opens a conversation where the body and mind's recognition of specific stressors can be registered by the computer and 'fed back' to the client in a cybernetic loop, in some cases activating a natural healing response through breaking patterns of adaptation of habituation to our specific stress patterns.
Although operating on the level of 'subtle energies', much like in Homeopathy, a small shift in our energy field, if accurate and appropriate, can instigate significant changes on the macro level.

 

The Indigo measures various physiological parameters of the body, and helps to manage and retrain stress patterns. Stress is created by any upset to our body’s equilibrium. NIH research indicates that stress plays a role in at least 87% of all illness. The Indigo biofeedback system can gently and non-invasively reduce stress and help enhance quality of life. The INDIGO System utilizes five comfortable, conductive straps with sensors that measure Electro Dermal Response on the wrists, ankles and forehead. It is accurate and sensitive enough to measure the EDR stress reactions to over 11,000 different Trivector signatures, which commonly interact with the human body.


How should I prepare for a Long-Distance session?

It is recommended that you drink several glasses of water during the hours before and after your session. Before the session begins we will have exchanged basic information via email or phone. At the beginning of the session we will chat briefly to gather information about how you are feeling at that moment. Then we will hang up the phone and proceed with the session. It is best that you are in a quiet and comfortable place before and during the session, preferably in your own home or office relaxing in a chair or lying down. Please do not use electronic devices during your session. Expect to relax for the duration of the session and notice any sensations, emotions, thoughts or impressions that may arise for processing. When the programs are complete, I will call or email to discuss the session.


What if I’m feeling healthy? Can Indigo Biofeedback still help me?
Even though you may feel healthy, Indigo biofeedback will still be able to help you gain awareness of issues that may be affecting your health that you’re simply not aware of – and most disease causes are beneath our consciousness. Often our bodies do not produce symptoms related to situations we have become accustomed to. For example, you may no longer sneeze in the presence of your cat but your body may continue to suffer the allergic response in more hidden ways, such as weakening your immune system. Indigo training helps to identify and retrain these stress patterns so your body can become more balanced.
Additionally, we are surrounded by a field of energy which the Indigo also works with. Environmental pollutants and numerous pathogens first enter this field before affecting the physical body.Thus the Indigo can be effective in preventing various illness or conditions by working with these stress patterns before they cause problems.

So INDIGO can remove blocks and balance my energy? What does that actually mean?  

In addition to our flesh and bones, it is important to remember that we are energetic beings. This is proven at a subatomic level and it is the energy within and around our cells that actually supports and affects the physical components of our cells. If we wish to achieve and maintain true health, we must work to correct both our physical and energetic systems. 


How is biofeedback used?
Biofeedback teaches participants how to identify the circumstances and stressors that trigger their symptoms. They may also learn how to avoid or cope with stressful events. Most are encouraged to change their habits, and some are trained in special techniques for gaining self-control and focusing intentions on desired objectives; such as, stress reduction, pain management, performance goals, mental focus, or subtle muscle control.

Biofeedback is one of the many tools available to health care professionals, and it can be a productive complement to any form of medical or general health program. It is most effective when participants accept responsibility for maintaining their own health, change unhealthy habits, and recognize that they can, by their own efforts, remedy some physical ailments.

Most people who benefit from biofeedback suffer from conditions that are caused or aggravated by stress. What beneficial "side-effects" are commonly experienced by biofeedback participants?

Can biofeedback cause undesirable side-effects?
Biofeedback is one of the safest medical modalities. Unwanted side-effects are uncommon, you may experience some mild healing reactions but these are only temporary. The most common is drowsiness, which is usually inherent with deep relaxation.


Can biofeedback diagnose or treat specific diseases? 
A diagnosis is a decision made by a physician, based on evidence obtained from various means, including medical devices and other tests. Devices by themselves, like CT scans and MRI's, do not diagnose or treat anything. They are tools of the practitioner.
Only physicians who are licensed to diagnose or treat specific illnesses are allowed to provide diagnoses or disease care. 
Stress causes or complicates nearly all disease processes; therefore, stress reduction techniques, like biofeedback are always beneficial and supportive of natural healing processes.


Can biofeedback be used safely with other medical and wellness programs?
Yes. Biofeedback encourages relaxation, positive lifestyle change, health education, and improved mind-body-spirit awareness. Biofeedback will likely work synergistically to improve the healthy benefits of any medical or complementary program. Of course, you should always disclose your participation in biofeedback with your physician, particularly if you are being treated for a serious medical condition.


Why do some critics say that devices that impart frequencies, micro-currents, or other forms of "information" fields are not actually biofeedback?
Biofeedback is the use of instruments and devices that measure biological information and feed the results back to a participant. The results are then used to educate and train the participant. Of course, there are different kinds of devices that measure different kinds of information, and there are many different applications. 

Some conventional definitions are more limited and do not yet incorporate any of the most recent biofeedback capabilities, like entrainment, bio-resonance, electro-physiological reactivity, and other forms of biophysical feedback that involve low-level energy fields, frequencies, or unconscious interaction.
At one time, the various parameters used to define today's conventional biofeedback were considered new and unproven, such as ECG, EEG, and GSR. It took time and research to build mainstream credibility, as it will with frontier technologies that stretch the definitions now. Inevitably, the definition of biofeedback will continue to evolve and expand with technology, as does the definition of "telephone."

Can the benefits of biofeedback be attributed to the "Placebo Effect?"
The Placebo Effect is part of the response to any active medical intervention. It describes the extent that an individual’s perception of a treatment assists in alleviating a symptom or disease. In other words, this effect represents an individual’s ability to heal themselves based on what they think and believe, combined with their inherent physiological capacity to heal.
In fact, this self-healing capacity is a very important feature of human biology, and as prize-winning author and biologist Rupert Sheldrake, PhD., says, "Any way of unleashing more of that is going to be a better system.”
Medical research often uses placebos in order to measure efficacy of a specific drug, surgery, or other intervention. The idea is to control the variable of a person’s belief and see if the intervention works better than nothing.” Being able to weigh benefits vs. risks is particularly important in drug and surgical interventions, since both can maim or kill the patient. Doing nothing is often preferable.

Biofeedback techniques are designed to engage the mind of the participant, not work around it. The point is to train participants to change some beliefs and behaviors, think in ways that help them achieve their goals, and improve their conscious and unconscious control over their bodies. Biofeedback devices have been proven to accelerate the learning, and in many cases, have outperformed placebos in clinical trials.

Does research support the use of biofeedback?
Yes. The volume of biofeedback research is vast, and it is growing extremely quickly. Various kinds of biofeedback have been proven useful in treating a wide variety of clinical disorders, especially stress-related problems, pain, and conditions involving poor muscle coordination.

Double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical research projects are currently underway to investigate the efficacy of EPR Biofeedback for stress, pain, and anxiety.
Biofeedback and other related forms of bio-energetic medicine are among the most exciting and fast-growing fields in medical research today.
